When you run the installer, Windows may show a SmartScreen warning because it is not signed with a paid certificate yet. Choose More info and then Run anyway. The macOS package is signed and notarised by Apple. On Linux, open the .deb or .rpm with a double click and your software centre installs it together with anything it still needs; it may point out that the package does not come from its own store. The .tar.gz unpacks into a folder with an install.sh that installs for your user only, without administrator rights. The checksum next to each download lets you verify that the file you got is the file we published.

Getting started

  1. Install and start the trial

On Windows, run the installer, accept the licence agreement and start Amberald from the Start menu. On a Mac, open the package, accept the licence agreement and start Amberald from the Applications folder. On Linux, install the package and start Amberald from your application menu. The licence window opens on first launch. Click Start trial and the full version including every AI feature is unlocked for 30 days. Nothing is sent anywhere for this.

  2. Point it at your photos

Import a folder in place and nothing on your disk moves; the catalogue only records ratings and edits. Coming from Lightroom, digiKam, Capture One or ON1? Import the existing catalogue instead and bring ratings, keywords, collections and people with you.

  3. Let the analysis run in the background

Faces, objects and the search index are computed while you work, and never at the expense of the interface. On a laptop you can leave it to the mains supply, which is the default.

System requirements

Operating system Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) · macOS 14 or newer (Apple silicon) · Linux, 64-bit, with glibc 2.39 or newer (Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40, openSUSE Tumbleweed or newer), Wayland or X11
Graphics A GPU with a Vulkan, DirectX 12 or Metal driver; on Linux, OpenGL 4.3 also works. Practically every card of the last few years qualifies; current drivers are recommended. The develop module renders on the GPU, which is why this matters more than the processor.
Memory 8 GB works. 16 GB or more is comfortable once the background analysis runs on a large library, and the setting that governs it is a slider, not a guess.
Disk space About 2 GB for the program including all AI models. The catalogue, previews and thumbnail cache grow with your library and go wherever you put them.
Also installed Nothing. Everything the program needs, on Windows including the Visual C++ runtime, comes with the download. On Linux, the .deb and .rpm pull in the usual system libraries (graphics, sound, Wayland and X11) through your package manager.
Internet Once, to start the trial; not needed for daily work. A purchased licence is activated online once and then runs offline indefinitely.

What is in the trial

Everything. There is no crippled feature, no watermark, no export limit and no photo count. The trial is the product, because a trial that hides the interesting half tells you nothing about whether the program fits your work.

When the 30 days are over, a licence is needed to keep using it. Nothing you did is lost: your catalogue, your edits and your keywords stay exactly where they are and are there again the moment you enter a licence.

Open-source components

Amberald contains open-source components. Their licences come with the program and can be read in its About window.

Was in der Testfassung steckt

Alles. Keine beschnittene Funktion, kein Wasserzeichen, keine Export-Grenze, keine Foto-Zahl.
